How to Make Money in a Small Niche With a Simple Business Model

ecomm

When it comes to earning money online as a marketer, most people go wrong in exactly the same place. That crucial error? Their ambition. Unfortunately, too much ambition is very commonly the downfall of many online businesses and marketers which essentially causes them to bite off more than they can chew and then give up too easily.

Instead of aiming to become rich or change the world, it makes much more sense to start off small. Aim to accomplish something small first and then build on each success to eventually reach the top.

So what might this look like?

The Small Niche Business Model

SmartPassiveIncome.com is a blog owned by internet marketer Pat Flynn which shares his methods for earning money. One of his most successful recent ventures was a website aimed at food trucks. This is a very small niche that made it easy for him to find routes to market (ways to communicate with the target demographic).

Compare this with creating a website in the ‘fitness’ niche and you can imagine how much easier it is to get noticed and to reach the right audience. From here, Pat began making money from selling an eBook aimed at those food trucks that would help them make more money and apply smart business skills.

THIS is the exact same business model that first time internet marketers should be using. You might decide to choose a different niche (sticking with a career is often a good choice though) and you may decide you’d rather sell an affiliate item. The general model though is almost flawless for the inexperienced marketer.

Why This Works

So what’s so good about this business model?

For starters, choosing a small niche to operate in means that you’ll be able to much more easily get noticed. If you choose to go the PPC route for instance, you’ll pay far less for advertising in this niche as compared with the amount you’d pay for a bodybuilding or dating related keyword.

At the same time, this helps you to come up with a very clear value proposition and offering. Ideally, your product should set out to solve a very specific problem for a very specific group of people. This will make it much easier to market that product, to promote it and to encourage people to consider buying.

My #1 Tip for Online Marketing Beginners

image8

Whether you’re a small business owner trying to create or enhance your online presence, or a newbie to the online marketing arena, the biggest thing is to just get started.

When I first started in offline marketing, the concept was brand new. Thanks to evolving technology and new and unique ways to market to our customers, whoever they may be. Most small businesses didn’t even realize they needed this type of service yet. And even when they did, things were constantly changing. Google changes, text message marketing, QR codes and more new types of custom advertising.

As an offline marketing business consultant, naturally I needed to learn and keep up with them. There were quickly new tools becoming available. There was also education becoming available. The reason for that is because it was such a much needed service. So the firsts to become successful at it realized they could benefit even more, by showing other people how to become financially independent, and provide this much needed service at the same time! It’s all good! :)

The same to be said of the online marketing arena. Affiliate marketers, store owners, product developers, Kindle authors, and anyone else wanting to try and better their future, all soon realized that they had to learn everything they could because of all the quick changes.

Now here’s my simple point. While continuing my education, and acquiring new tools, I would study some of the other students. The questions they asked, the things they would say, and it always came down to one thing. Fear. Fear of rejection, fear of getting started, fear of failure. I’m not here to talk about fear. That’s a different post! I’m here to take an ounce of that fear away. For the newbies!

The first rule of thumb when starting out online is your domain name. I always recommend getting your own. Don’t let an “all in one online suite” of anything, have your domain name. Offline marketers, don’t let those big marketing firms who tout awesome SEO skills, have your domain name.

I know the domain name is what keeps beginners from getting started. Especially if you’re on a limited budget you really want to get it right. So maybe you just have to keep doing your niche research right?

Well sure, but quit using that as an excuse. Here’s my tip: Go now, and get yourself a (dot)info. GoDaddy sells (dot) infos for 3.99! Get that thing going. Get your hosting, transfer the domain, install a wordpress blog and just start doing! Play. Have fun. Get inspired.

You’re going to get experience, you’re going to get ideas, and you’re going to be on your way! And then when you’ve found the perfect domain name for your project, product or service, you’ll get that baby up in no time. You’ll have gotten the kinks, the little mistakes, and the (possible) big mistakes out of the way.

Best of all you’ll feel your confidence level on the rise. And I personally recommend that you proceed with confidence! (In everything that you do!) Go do it. Now!

What if I told you, that everything you’ve heard about making money on the internet was a lie?

money

Bold, right? Well I won’t tell you that everything you’ve heard or read about making money on the internet is a lie. Just because I don’t know what you’ve read or heard.

But I can tell you this. That the majority of it is bullcrap! If you think you’ll be able to fire your boss with Affiliate Marketing or TeeSpring, you may be waiting…and waiting, for a while!

“But Ali you promote these kinds of things”

Yes I do! And I do make money with them and you can too! If you are armed with the knowledge and tools to help you get there as quickly as possible.

But please keep in mind that all those gurus with pictures in front of mansions, standing next to their Lamborghinis are just “stuff” on the internet. If you’re going to buy into this notion that a few small, inexpensive moves are going to enable you to set and forget, and sit back and reap a gold mine…. well have you seen the Brooklyn bridge? I’m selling it cheap! Interested?

The truth is there’s a lot of other things that factor in here. You need to have a real passion. You need to have focus and discipline. You need to have a PLAN. If you want to make money selling T shirts then you’d better be pretty darn passionate about T shirts and have an eye for graphic design! (Then the tools to market successfully).

You also must know where you’re going and WHY! In fact if you’re listening to any of the real experts, the people I trust, they’ll tell you that your mindset is the first place to start. You might not believe that but I’m telling you it’s the truth. And it’s harder than you think! The next thing they’ll tell you is you need to start from the end! You must figure out your why!

Since the WHY is a very huge factor, and there’s so much more to do after that, like figure out where you want to go next, I’m offering you a golden nugget!

Sifting between the who’s who and what’s what out there, actually takes a whole lot of time! And yes, money!

The 10-Day Negative Thought Fast

Would you like a simple way to really change your life? Instead of merely getting by, you’ll find that your life can truly be exceptional when you focus on positive solutions rather than the constraints of your challenges.

This 10-Day Negative Thought Fast, originated by Emmett Fox, one of the most popular self-help authors and speakers of the early 20th century, is an adventure you’ll reap many benefits from.

Here are the rules:

1. If you break any of the other rules, you must start the 10 days over from the beginning. To get the full effect, you must complete 10 consecutive days. Giving up negative thoughts is a little like giving up a drug; you’ve got to stop using them completely, otherwise you haven’t truly quit.

2. You cannot focus on a negative thought or remain in a negative emotional state for more than five minutes. Ideally, the time should be much shorter. Five minutes should be plenty of time to recognize what’s going on and put a stop to it. Remember, even one instance of lingering for more than five minutes means starting over.

3. You must focus on solutions. When the negative thoughts start, the idea is to immediately start contemplating possible solutions. Spend your time solving your challenges instead of focusing on them.

* If you’re like most people, you’ve probably had the same challenges for quite a while without resolution. It’s time to try something else instead of dwelling on what’s wrong.

This sounds deceptively easy, but you may be surprised how difficult it is to give up negativity. We tend to think that worrying helps in some way. But you’ve probably been worrying about a lot of things for a long time and they haven’t improved.

When you’re faced with a negative thought (and there will be many!), the best response is to think to yourself, “How can I solve or improve this challenge?” The point is to immediately begin focusing on solutions. When you ask a good question, you’ll receive good answers.

Over the 10 days, you’ll begin to form a habit of immediately recognizing a negative mental state and then focusing on solutions for what you feel negatively about. If you continue the process after the 10 days are completed, you’ll develop a permanent habit that will only require a minimal amount of maintenance.

You might need several attempts to complete the full 10 days. It’s common to have numerous slips on day one and then a few others later in the process. Refrain from beating yourself up over it. Remember, you’re focusing on solutions.

Taking Your Focus Away From A Negative Thought

One way to help keep the negative thoughts at bay is to ask you positive questions like the following:

* What’s great about today?
* What do I like the most about this?
* What am I most proud of?
* What am I most looking forward to?

If you’re filling your mind with positive thoughts, there’s no room for the negative stuff. And since we can only consciously think about one thing at a time, making the most out of your thoughts makes sense.

Try this 10-day adventure and see if it doesn’t change your life. You’ll be so amazed at the results that you’ll never want to go back to the old way of dwelling on the challenges in your life. So start this process today and change your life for the better.

Breaking Through The Strongest Resistance

The more determined you are to make changes in the way you think, the more prepared you  can be when it comes to accepting change and letting go of your past. Once you have chosen to believe the affirmations you have created, you can force your subconscious into two opposite reactions – reappraisal or avoidance.

The bigger the issue you face, the bigger the gap between inner truth and positive  affirmations will be. This may cause you to experience resistance, a process wherein the subconscious mind chooses to stick to perceived inner truths and prevent you from examining the issue at hand. This strong reaction is usually marked by an overwhelming negative feeling that you experience as you try stating positive affirmations.

On the other hand, reappraisal happens when you experience a sense of well being and joy. This forces your mind to respond according to its set of beliefs in an instinctive manner. This thrilling sensation is a good indication that the affirmations you made are finally working. By constantly repeating affirmations with passion and conviction, you can start chipping away even the strongest resistance you may experience. You can even use additional techniques that can magnify the effectiveness of your affirmations.

Once you finally break the resistance, your subconscious will automatically re-examine its core beliefs and thought patterns. When your dysfunctional beliefs are identified and replaced by a new set of inner truths, things will change quickly before your eyes. Depending on how deep these beliefs lay in your consciousness, every other thought you learned based on your original inner truth will slowly become unfounded. Your subconscious mind re-examines all of them and walks you through a period of deep introspection. However, you may need professional support if you are currently experiencing a strong resistance.

Positive affirmations actually work by reprogramming your thought patterns, changing the way you feel about certain circumstances, and replacing dysfunctional beliefs with a new set of inner truths. These effects will eventually lead to a positive change that comes naturally and easily. The strong effects of your affirmations will start reflecting in your external life as you experience seismic changes that will improve many aspects of your life. Remember, affirmations are more than just positive statements. They can be used to create or destroy so they can either bring you failure or success.

Using Positive Self-Talk to Conquer Any Goal

Do you feel like you are always talking yourself out of success? As soon as you start to set goals for yourself, do you suddenly have nagging thoughts about how you aren’t up to the task or how you simply aren’t qualified to carry it through?

If you have ever experienced either situation, you need to change the way you respond to your inner dialogue. Instead of obeying your negative commands, you can use positive self-talk to counter the negativity and overcome nearly all anxious thoughts.

Setting Goals and Sticking to Them with Positive Self-Talk

Are you initially filled with excitement when you first set goals for yourself? Are these thoughts then followed by self-doubt and self-defeating thoughts that stop you in your tracks before you even get started?

It can be difficult to make the most of your life when you are constantly talking yourself out of being a success. It can be frustrating and discouraging to have these thoughts constantly plaguing you. Many of us, in fact, don’t even realize we have them! All we know is that we don’t have the confidence to stick to our plans and reach our goals.

But there’s another way!

Positive self-talk is an effective way to set goals and ensure that you stick to them, even if you have never been able to do this before. The way this works is that you decide what goal is important to you, and then you plan the logistics of how you are going to attain this goal. When self-doubt starts kicking in, you will respond with affirmations that prove your success without surrendering to the negative pressure. Since you’re reading this article, it’s clear that you’re no quitter and you’re certainly not a failure, so start believing in yourself!

Re-Programming Your Mind

Affirmations are essentially positive statements that re-program your mind for the positive. The moment you have a self-defeating thought you’d be able to counter the negative with a motivating statement. An example of a positive affirmation is: “I am worthy of great success,” or “I see myself in the winner’s circle.” What this does is replace negativity with thoughts that will help you move toward your goals instead of further away from them.

Positive self-talk is easier to implement than you might think. You may not be aware of the severity of the negative dialogue currently within your mind. However, once you begin with positive self-talk, you will suddenly realize that you are self-sabotaging the goals you set for yourself from the minute that you make them. This process can open your eyes to exactly how much this inner conversation has been interfering with your life. You’ll feel hopeful that you can now set goals and surpass them.

Through positive self-talk you will be able easily set long and short-term goals for yourself. And when you use affirmations, you’ll have accessible tools to help you push yourself further than ever before. Learning to quiet negativity with positive thoughts is a great move toward setting and attaining future goals with ease.

Let’s talk about Fear

If you wonder why we fear things you probably have heard the phrase “fight or flight.” This refers to a very real change that occurs in our body when we experience fear. It’s a survival mechanism.

Imagine you are jogging in the park and you catch a glimpse of a man running at you with a baseball bat. You don’t think about whether he wants you to throw a few pitches for batting practice – you run like heck. Your internal survival system is telling you to flee danger.

When our fight or flight response is engaged, a series of nerve and chemical responses are triggered. Adrenaline and cortisol are released into our bloodstream and this causes other systematic changes.

The respiratory and heart rate increases. Blood is pumped into your muscles to give you more energy to run away or to fight. Your pupils dilate and you have a heightened  awareness of every noise, movement and smell occurring around you. You look right and left for an attacker.

As soon as the fight or flight response is activated we perceive everything as a danger. You are in survival mode. Does it surprise you to learn that even your smallest fears cause this same response within your body?

When you are in survival mode your thinking is ultra-focused on getting away from the danger to safety. This is an incredibly powerful source of lifesaving energy when faced with danger.

However, most people don’t face real physical danger on a daily basis. Now if you are a soldier or first responder, you do have frequent engagements with life threatening situations. But for most of us, our fight or flight response is used more to protect ourselves in a world of psychological rather than physical danger. You may have felt your muscles tense the last time your boss asked you to work more hours over the weekend. Or perhaps you want to advance you career by taking on speaking engagements, but the thought of doing this makes your stomach  churn.

Unfortunately fear can keep us from achieving our dreams and it can even make you ill. If you experience extended periods of anxiety, poor concentration or depression, your fears may be taking over your life – and your health.

The first step in learning how to manage fear is to understand it.

How Fearless Are You?

Every person has some type of fear inside of them. You may be worried or scared about performing well at work. Or you may be afraid that you have developed a serious illness. These are all solid fears but it is the way in which you handle them that counts.

While it can be difficult to face your fears head on, you can still attempt to deal with them bit by bit. If you are concerned about your job performance, start looking for ways to improve this. Maybe you need to learn a new skill or just have more confidence in what you do.

When you start to feel more confident others will also see you as more confident. A good way to increase your confidence level is by thinking positively each day. Try using positive affirmations to help you reach your goals. Each morning repeat these affirmations until you truly believe them.

Being fearless means that you will not allow any fear to get the better of you or hold you back. Instead you take steps to learn how to deal with these issues and look for ways to work around them. Sometimes talking to another person about your fears can be a huge help. You may discover that they have fears as well.

While everyone loves to be known as fearless there are times when being fearless is not good. If you begin to act in a reckless manner you could injure yourself or others around you. There is a fine line between being scared to do something and downright doing something which would be considered foolish.

The best way to conquer any fear is to tackle it slowly, over a period of time. Try to do things that are a little out of your comfort zone so you can push your limits. As you achieve each goal then you should feel proud of what you have just accomplished.

If you continue this process you will discover that your fears aren’t as strong as they once were. Plus your convictions and beliefs will be stronger and this will help you become a more successful person.

There is nothing wrong in having any type of fear. You just do not want this fear to overtake your life. Instead set yourself small challenges which will help you overcome your fear and allow you to lead the life you really want to.

My Facebook Hiatus

Business people and college students are taking the plunge and either deleting or deactivating their Facebook accounts!  Some in business, are deactivating. This is a temporary measure where you can come back at any time and everything is the same. When I researched it and tweeted about it I found that many young people, would do this to take breaks, say for exams or something important. But I also found that some young people were deleting altogether! Honestly I wasn’t ready to take that final plunge. But I found deactivation, refreshing, enlightening and quite productive.

When I first got on in 2009, it was completely addicting. I reconnected with some wonderful people from childhood, some of whom it was like we never parted.  People could just show up anywhere in a conversation and make it so much fun! Put a smile on your face all day. I got to see some family, and pictures. I got to follow musicians! And I loved hearing people’s choices in music. And classic cars, and see who else was nuts about muscle like me! I adore the workout enthusiasts, and love to surround myself with beneficial friendships where we can motivate each other! And politics. Yes really! I don’t usually voice my political opinion but I love reading others, and thinking. I may or may not agree but have still found some wonderful endearing friends! We don’t have to agree… it’s ok! (I agree with myself that I don’t like any of them! The politicians, that is) Sometimes it’s even fun to see what you’re eating…..and uh, drinking too… I guess! My Bears groups (I could stay there all day!)  And oh how I enjoy the Monday hater’s (you could do something about that..) and the Friday lover’s ( LOVE me some Fridays! Love Mondays too #DontJudgeMe)

I also have an amazing group of inspiring business associates, entrepreneurs and mentors! I am still giddy with glee that I am “friends” with my biggest, most beloved, most inspiring and most awesome mentor (who told his students to get on social media..in 2009! Thank you, Jim!).  This is the area..I hands down consider the “Facebook time” well spent!

Now you’re lucky if you get to see something  you enjoy because Facebook  controls your timeline and you could be missing tons! It literally thinks it knows what you want to see.   (Oh but that’s ok,,you can find it..sooner or later..just keep looking….tick tock) ” Oh, there it is…HAHAHA that was hilarious! 45 minutes in.

The “sharing” a few years ago was real. Real people connecting. I have a whole family of Bears fan friends that I don’t even really know, who open themselves up and share who they are. There are some real gems! And I enjoy interaction from the people I personally know and the people I don’t!

Now the term “sharing” has taken on a whole new life.  18 recycled, regurgitated pictures on 6 different “liked” pages show up, along with the 4 friends that liked it and shared it!  Sometimes they’re inspiring, or funny. Other times they’re just downright depressing! Please don’t misunderstand, I do like seeing your opinions and likes. If we all used our brains instead of the share finger, we could come up with some really clever and funny ways to share what we really think and who we really are. Imagine the possib…..

Sharing works in other ways too. They share info about you. They “reserve the right to”.. Wait I haven’t checked for the latest privacy update, let me get back to you on that. I wish mainstream media would show you and educate you with the documentary “Terms and Conditions May Apply” it is  SO important that you are at least educated!  But if you can’t see that one..at least google “KlearGear.com” and check out THEIR terms and conditions! Very, very costly to those who didn’t! (really, seriously, check it out!)

While I got on Twitter about the same time, I notice right away that if you wanted interaction from the celebrities you loved, (in my case, athletes..sports media etc.,) that that was the place to be! If you’ve “known” me long enough you know I adore twitter. I think it’s compact and complete. I truly believe that’s why you’ll see athletes use it more. Case and point. If you follow someone on both platforms you may notice there is more interaction on their part on twitter. One might post on Facebook, get 672 likes and 347 responses (in the first 2 minutes) and yet never come back to the post. On twitter, you could get a response 😉 try it sometime!

Anyway my point wasn’t to build up twitter and knock down Facebook, it’s about the (advanced) life lesson I have learned from it. If you can keep it short, you can still be productive!

So now during my Facebook hiatus, it was literally like breaking a habit. I even think it was somewhere around 3 weeks! I had to get back on for business sooner or later, but I feel like the coincidental “21 day rule” really did come into play. As I have returned now, I do get a little gut nudge when I want to “just quick check” I hope that continues and I don’t fall back into the old habit. Right now I can take that nudge and go productively run with it. Now I’ll admit, that at the time of this writing..my Chicago Bears just got done putting a whoopin on their favorite Monday night target, the Dallas Cowboys..so some.. “just checkin'” was unavoidable this morning! 😉

In conclusion, I love the fun like everyone else. But it’s not reality. And it becomes less and less reality every day. It also changes security measures on you on the fly. So please educate yourselves! And now, while I am richer (facetious) for knowing that you like Kraft and Chase Bank ( you’re now on their radar for solicitation) and cute puppies and really funny sh!t, I just wasted 30 minutes of productive time that I’ll never get back.  And if I gave in and commented somewhere, then surely I’ll need to keep checking back…….. uhhhh tick tock…

Encouraging and inspiring people on your friend’s list is always welcomed. Maybe  instead of sharing a quote on a picture every single time, go do something and report back on that! ( Hey now….) The silly, funny and x rated share pics are fun when it’s joking time. But try actually doing something funny. Even if it’s by accident. America’s funniest home video style!  Please leave out the personal versions of the x rated stuff. (Or you can just learn the privacy features!) Share some creativity with us. Share a personal experience with us. If you need guidance, love or even validation, I find that there are always people in Face book land that will be there to give you that! (These also do apply to twitter)

And if you’re wondering if you need a break from Facebook, ask yourself this. Could I go 2 days without it? Or even 1? If the answer is no, then you need it! Real life is passing you by! Don’t miss something good. Unlike life, regret never spoils.
